Silva Claims World Cup is Defenders Nightmare

Paris St Germain defender Thiago Silva has stated that this is a World Cup not for defenders to shine. The World Cup 2014 is turning out into one of the most exciting international tournaments in recent memory. Even though we have not even managed to complete most of the group matches, the tournament has seen several goals scored. In terms of comparison with the previous World Cup in South Africa, the 2014 edition has already seen 41 goals scoring just the 12 opening matches. Meanwhile, the 2010 World Cup only saw 20 goals during the same period.

This has led to Silva, who was widely expected to be a major star in this World Cup, to come out with a statement saying that this is a defender’s nightmare. However, he is planning to prevent this from happening in the future, as he is working very hard in training. Silva and David Luiz are the preferred centre back combination for Brazilian national team. They have so far been unconvincing in the World Cup. While they needed a little bit of luck in the opening 3-1 win over Croatia, they were far from their best in the 0-0 draw against Mexico.

Silva, though, will be hoping to keep another clean sheet against Cameroon in the final group match. "You have to have a good defence, it makes it difficult for the opponents. This is the World Cup for those who like goals, who like football. For a defender that’s not good, but it’s part of football. We worked well this week defensively to be able to neutralise our opponents. We have players who are ready and the front two score goals. David Luiz is a player who makes us feel at ease. Aside from marking very well, he’s technically very strong,” said Silva.
